How to Attract Fairies to your Garden

Fairies are very shy and patience is required. Sometimes they appear as flashes of light, or swift moving shadows often seen out of the corner of your eye. Sometimes they will allow their presence to be known by a gentle scent of flowers carried on a breeze or a subtle touch on your skin. Fairies are always present where there are flowers and trees. Fairies are part of the energy source that helps every plant grow. They are sometimes called Nature Spirits or Devas, meaning "shining lights". Even the tiniest viola flower hidden in the grass has a fairy attached to it, so garden carefully!

If you want to attract fairy folk to your garden or home this is what you do. The most effective way to invite fairies to your home is to plant their favorite flowers. Fairies share the same likes as hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees. Flowers that attract these garden friends will also attract fairies. Bluebells, foxglove, forget-me-nots, heather, hollyhocks, lilacs, lilies, marigolds, pansies, peonies, primrose, and roses are flowers beloved by the wee folk. Apple and or Oak trees, Fairies often live and sleep in these trees. The oak is held sacred by many of them. They also love to steal birdhouses for their homes, so put a crystal on the house to attract the fairy to it. Place it in your garden and soon a fairy may make it home. Fairy are attracted to bright, shinny and beautiful things. Oh and very important, if you want to keep the wee folk around don't let your cat wander the garden!

Don’t forget that the wee ones are nature loving and enjoy their fun. When attracting fairies into your garden keep it clear of weeds and slugs, although a small patch that is unkempt or planted with wildflowers is good, so plan to leave part of your garden a bit unkempt. This small area will make fairies feel welcomed and allows them to hide in the long grass. It doesn’t have to be a very large space, but having this one little space will give joy to your fairy friends.

Leave out a food offering over night. Fairies especially love dairy products, bread, cakes, honey and cookies. Don’t despair if in the morning it doesn’t look like the meal has been eaten. Fairies are able to extract the essence of food without physically eating it.

They won't stick around long if you are a foul tempered person or unpleasant to animals and children. Once you've offended one of the wee folk they will leave and never return. And remember to never take gold from a fairy, Fairy gold is notoriously unreliable, appearing as gold when paid, but soon thereafter revealing itself to be leaves, blossoms, gingerbread cakes, or a variety of other useless things.

A story of the origin of fairies appears in a chapter about Peter Pan in J. M. Barrie's 1902 novel The Little White Bird, and was incorporated into his later works about the character. Barrie wrote, "When the first baby laughed for the first time, his laugh broke into a million pieces, and they all went skipping about. That was the beginning of fairies.

*Side note: I started this before summer and stopped working on it. I decided to work on unfinished paintings in my folder before starting anything new. The frog is one from my garden (He of course doesn't have the gold details), he is no bigger than the tip of my finger but makes the biggest frog noises I've ever heard!
